Whatever you are… be a good one

I have a number of favorite quotes and am constantly finding new phrases to inspire or remind me of something important to me. This quote by Abraham Lincoln sits in the middle of my refridgerator door on a plain white 4″x4″ magnet yet I don’t always notice it… today however, it popped me upside the head. “Yo Jen! Stop slacking and just do what you do and do it well!”. I needed to hear that – and loudly. I’ve been struggling to find a direction. My creativity is running ramped with ideas and things I’d like to try, yet my to-do list is lacking time to add more and part of me is fighting back with the “but you need to learn how to…” every 5 minutes.

What I was reminded of today was…

It’s not about what you do specificially, but how you do it. I don’t think it matters if you are a big celebrity in your own world if you aren’t good at it… nor does it matter if you’re a tiny fish in that big sea, if you are darn good at what you do, then you’re doing something very right. It doesn’t matter if you’re a huge name in some facet of the universe, if you aren’t a good person, what does your skill reallymatter to the rest of the population? Not much – the “goodness” of it, whatever “it” is, lends to the majority of the value.

Whatever you are, be a good one
Whatever you are, be a good one

I think the key is that straight forward and simple…

Whatever you are, be a good one – gosh darnit

My 5 foot garden snake is back

Last year I spent very little time in my flower garden because I kept running into the local snakes. Rarely were they tiny little garden snakes. No, the Goode house seems to be encouraging the visitation or co-habitation of large snakes This morning I turned on the sprinklers for the first time and then I saw one of the regulars once again. It’s a bull snake measuring in at approximately 5′ long and it lives under the garden inside a rock wall. I think it came out in view to dry off and warm up a bit after the unexpected cold shower that soaked his space below.

I love nature and the outdoors. I love gardening and taking care of my various plants… I don’t however, care much for the helpful hand of the local reptiles. I would close off the cracks in the rocks now if it weren’t for the animals already living inside. I wish there were a way to invite the snakes to leave amicably – and then keep them out all together.

I blame it all on the bunnies. If there were no bunny buffet – also living in the rock wall, the snakes would have to go else where for food. I’m guess I’m growing a regular reptile habitat here!

What are YOU thankful for today? My 5 things of thanks this week

This week whizzed by again, I can’t remember what happened yesterday let alone back to Monday in most cases. Yet, I am thankful for a wide array of topics none-the-less.

I am thankful for:

1. Modern Medicine – as I type, my sister is in surgery. Without modern medicine, there wouldn’t be these kinds of opportunities to fix a body’s aliments. Looking forward to the phone call in a few hours saying all is well.

2. My husband’s talents – Although his specialty is Architecture, he’s got a load of skills and talents and this fabulous ability to apply them in many areas. I boss him around a lot because I hate to see the brilliance put aside for frustration, but deep down, I wish I were half as smart as he is with half the potential he has.

3. My garden time – On Sunday, Mother’s day I dragged the entire family to Home Depot to gather up a few gardening supplies as well as a handful of new perennials for the year. I actually came home and planted everything rather than my typical – leave it on the porch and forget to water it. The rabbit’s haven’t nibbled anything yet!

4. My children learn something every day – dispite the complaints and issues that seem to arise every year with the public school system, I am thankful we have the opportunity to send our children to school. They have teachers that care about them and they learn something every day.. I just wish the kids would tell me what they learned.

5. I’m presenting at Affiliate Summit in New York this August – I just received word late last night that a presentation a group of us submitted has been approved – woot! We will be speaking about “Getting Noticed FAST” on a panel with  Trisha Lyn Fawver, Stephanie Lichtenstein and Michael Buechele. I’m also excited that Lisa Picarille will be our moderator. It’s a fantastic group of people and a really fun topic!

I think today is a good day to treat yourself – I’m sure you’ve earned it!

Going green is so trendy

Going green or being green or watching your carbon footprint is such a trendy thing to do these days. Growing up, I remember recycling was just something we just did. It was fun to haul all the soda cans to the recycle place and watch them get sucked into the machine and then end up with enough change to buy a popsicle. I wore hand-me-downs and passed my clothes on to others. We ate leftovers and we had compost piles. I made gifts out of pieces and parts of things – and here we are again talking about recycling and saving and reusing.

What’s really changed?

I still go to the thrift store and look for useful items. I still try to reuse, my kids share clothes at times and I still get grumpy when leftovers are thrown out instead of eaten. Is the new trend to Go Green just a marketing pitch to remind us we can make a difference? It’s entertaining to me how now there is this big bandwagon we can jump on, dance together in green happiness and declare ourselves conscience of the world around us and how we interact with it.

eco friendly penguins

From my perspective, my family could cut down the the things we throw away and focus a bit more on how to reuse or recycle. I’ve even made a collection of eco friendly penguins to aid in the reminding of the earth we have to take care of. However, I’m pretty sure all penguins are eco friendly, mine simply like to brag about it. I have heard penguins in general are pro-green… they poop quite a bit – they’re so very helpful to be fortifying the soil for our veggie growing, don’t you think? Yes, I know, too bad they don’t waddle in my garden.

Sure, we use plastic more these days than when I was a kid – except tupperware maybe. I think the plastic push started with the “Save the Trees” campaign – use alternatives to paper. Now our landfills are filling up with plastics that won’t decompose so we’re back to paper or using other fibers and fabrics. Will the next trend be “Save the Sheep”, because they’re all hairless and cold? Will computers and other advances in technology be encased in boxes made of corn husks?

save the sheep!

I love the concept of “Go Green”, I think it’s important to be aware of our resources and be mindful how we use them. I think the concept is even more important than the global issue, we need to conserve within our homes and families and offices. I think it’s also important to give back and replenish what we use. It’s like the Girl Scout cookies in the cabinet.. they aren’t always available so you have to watch how quickly you eat them, and if you are the one to eat the last cookie, you better have a plan to make sure there are more for everyone else.

I’d you’d like to look trendy, I suggest you grab a Recycle penguin t-shirt and wear it with pride!

Happy Cinco de Mayo – Time to Celebrate

Here in Colorado, I’ve always heard of the Cinco de Mayo celebrations, but I’ve never personally gotten involved. It’s not a part of my heritage, but it’s definitely a part of my environment. I thought everyone had a celebration on May 5th, only to find out as I got older that it’s not a common activity everywhere in the country. To me, May 5th wouldn’t be the same without the parties!

For me, I think every day in life should be such a fun filled celebration. Although it doesn’t always turn out that way, the goal is to try to have an attitude like a celebration is right around the corner. I think I reach this goal.. oh, I don’t know.. maybe one out of ever 6 days or so. But, I do make a point to celebrate that myself and my family and friends are healthy and happy and here to enjoy another day together.

Some thoughts on Celebrating

Tolerance and celebration of individual differences is the fire that fuels lasting love.
~ Tom Hannah quotes

If I need a cause for celebration
Or a comfort I can use to ease my mind
I rely on my imagination
And I dream of an imaginary time.
~ Billy Joel quotes

Stop worrying about the potholes in the road and celebrate the journey!
~ Barbara Hoffman

Celebrate the happiness that friends are always giving, make every day a holiday and celebrate just living!
~ Amanda Bradley

The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate.
~ Oprah Winfrey

The Hierarchy of Deliciousness

Today’s Illustration Friday topic is Hierarchy, and the first thing that came to mind was a penguin pyramid. Sure, I could have done something like a pile of penguins or a cheerleading penguin group or even a king of the ice raft… but I couldn’t decide which penguin specifically would get to sit on top. So instead I sat here wondering what to make for dinner.

Then I realized that cherries have it made in the world of who lives at the top…
and voila, the Hierarchy of Deliciousness.

Cherry on Top by JGoode

In case you are a little confused about the actual order of things when it comes to the triple brownie hot fudge banana split sundae, I’ll splain it to ya…

Beginning at the bottom and working our way up the ranks to the ruler of them all…

Bowl, Brownie, Banana, Brownie, Banana, Scoop – scoop – scoop (any flavor combo is fine), fudge and a bit more fudge, whipped cream, nuts, sprinkles (if you must, you can substitute with sprinkles and then  nuts or omit one or both all together), and finally, you top it off

with a cherry on top!

I suppose, if you need a spoon you can wiggle it in there somewhere, but it’s not always necessary.

What are you thankful for today?

Coming to the end of a week that seriously flew by – I’m not even finished thinking of what I needed to do this week and now it’s Friday. The weather was great for a few days and today, once again, its cold and foggy… I miss the sun already!

Rainy Day Penguin by JGoode

However, there’s always plenty to be thankful for – even in the midst of the drizzle.

1. Chatted with a friend I rarely see. I don’t often catch up with friends face to face. I tend to hide out at home working and keeping busy. This week I had the opportunity to sit and chat with a friend mid-week that I haven’t talked with in quite a while. Our kids get along great.. so play time for them was super fun too.

2. Had some good talk time with my husband. The schedule this time of year gets so crazy for our family – we don’t often have a chance to catch up with each other. We had some good brainstorming talks.. figuring out “where to go from here” with all the economic changes and family goals, etc. I think I come across as bossy so much, due to being the family coordinator – it’s nice to have a chance to just share thoughts.

3. My oldest had a super great baseball game last weekend. He was given the opportunity to pitch – after weeks of practicing and hoping for the chance – and he did an outstanding job! The benefit of this, I am seeing, is he’s taking all that positive feedback and put it into his effort and is just doing great all around. It’s neat to watch the attitude change.

4. I’m surrounded by amazing people. I realize every day that I have been so blessed to be surrounded by fabulous people, in every aspect of my life. I don’t know how that happened, but I can’t say thank you enough to the people karama Gods.

5. Shared my thoughts on TheSpew yesterday. I had the opportunity to chat with some brilliant women in the online marketing world yesterday – I was so excited when I was invited to participate in the podcast, and delighted it was a topic I knew something about. Was a great time.

Talking about Cafepress changes on TheSpew

Yesterday I had the pleasure of sharing my insight on TheSpew, a new podcast created by women in online marketing for women in online marketing. I talked about the recent CafePress marketplace changes with these fabulous women… Missy Ward moderated with panelists Lisa Riolo and Karen Garcia. Carolyn Tang from Share a Sale was also a guest – she talked about a road trip the company is making this summer, sounds super fun!

Although we had a number of technical difficulties recording the show – weather decided not to play nice and caused a number of disconnects throughout call and malfunctions – the final cut turned out great!

I talked about the changes taking place at Cafepress, how it is affecting people (myself included) and what I am doing with my own business. The news has been out for little over a week, for me the emotional side has passed and now I’ve moved more into the understanding and planning phase.

It was nice to be able to talk with the girls – we did so much laughing, I cried.
