What does making a difference really mean?

I hear a lot of people, a lot of the time, saying they want to make a difference. What does this really mean? How much “different” does something have to be to be counted as a difference – and how much effort is needed to make that difference?

I truly believe small acts of kindness can have an enormous impact. I think the smallest bit of effort, the smallest big of intent can make a huge difference when it’s combined with a huge amount of sincerity and expectations for the best.

I read somewhere, years ago, that instead of looking at the ground when you walk down the street, make a point to smile at people you pass. Not like a scary crazy person on the verge of stalking kind of smile. Just a genuine hello grin rather than avoiding the eye contact. It’s amazing how something so small can change a mood. I have found it makes a huge difference in how I feel about the day when I’ve made the slightest effort to be kind to someone else… with or without a reason. I might be having a super crummy day, but by helping someone else in some way, my own irritants tend to fade into the background. Sure, my problems don’t go away entirely – but they do feel less heavy when I’ve made an effort to share in someone else’s day.

I have found that I tend to get so absorbed in my own schedule, my own needs and my own agenda that I forget to take the time for the little things. I have to remind myself that these little things make a difference to someone else. I have to remember – when I’m gone, I want people to remember me and who I was – not what I had or what material things I gave. Yet, people don’t know who we are unless we share it.

Our gestures don’t have to be grand to have an impact. We don’t have to dedicate hours upon hours of time to show we are here to help. A little note to let someone know you’re thinking about them or a moment to pass on a thought… I believe it’s the realness of it – the genuine aspect that makes the difference.

Put forth the effort and do it sincerely, that’s the key to making a difference.

You might be asking.. what the heck is World Penguin Day?

There isn’t a ton of information about the day other than its a good time to learn a little bit more and pass on the penguin happiness. However, Penguin Geek has a great post about the Adelie Penguins and their migration beginning on the 25th of every year.

There’s also a little bit of information at Holiday Insights about both World Penguin day and Penguin Awareness day (January 20th).

What are you Thankful for Today?

I am thankful…
the week is over.
I have a network of great people to brainstorm with, even when times get tough.
I’m capable of controlling my own happiness.

This week has been one of the hardest for me for a long time.
Monday I learned of a business change with my primary product provider that would affect an enormous amount of people, yet these people wouldn’t find out until Wednesday. I’ve been riding an emotional roller-coaster as if I had out of control pregnant hormones. I spent Wednesday around the web, chatting, emailing, twittering…  and on the phone talking with quite a few of these people affected by this – not a one having the ability to say “Hey, this is gonna be great!”.We’ve built businesses based on another company’s business model and they’ve changed the pricing structure. Many are angry – many are leaving – Incomes are dropping by an average of 50% without having formulated a backup plan yet and at a time when so many households have already been dealing with salary cuts and layoffs – it’s very scary.

I’m in this boat with angry, sad, scared and and sometimes just plain numb people.  I’m trying to find the positive, because there always is positive. I am sure I have a paddle, I just need to grab hold of it better. Having surrounded myself a group of level-headed, thought provoking personalities. There are many people in this situation with me that are thinking this through and working on plans – we’re helping each other make it through.

I’ve spent this week arguing with my own “What next” thoughts and every hour is a new set of ideas, questions and inspirations. Ultimately, my decision is to keep moving forward. Take change in as if it were a new found friend and work with it to create something positive come from it. The benefit here is that I have warning the change is coming.pricing doesn’t actually go into effect until June 1 and my income won’t see the change until after that.

I’m thankful I still have my skills. I’m thankful I still have control of my own business. I may not be in control of the pricing I receive for the products I sell and I may not be in control of the availability of production or anything else dealing with tangible goods – but unless I plan on manufacturing every aspect of every product I offer, this kind of control is never entirely mine. I’m glad I’m experiencing this now, rather than aftering having invested thousands of dollars with no networking of “colleagues” in the business.

I will be expanding my business to reach other areas – branch out into new product offerings, and as with any good business model, have better backups for the hiccups that come along with tangible goods.

My thoughts go out to all the wonderful people this change is touching.

Watch for new great things –

What are YOU thankful for today?

What next

This is a reoccurring question these days for so many people in so many places.. what next? Right now it’s a loaded question. It feels like every next step is so important and so much is relying on the answer being correct.

Why?

In order to progress every day, shouldn’t we always be asking ourselves what next? Shouldn’t we be continually striving for more, or better, or improved or something?

Even the idea of resting is a sometimes good solution for the “what next” problem.

The day we stop asking what is next, is a day we should start to worry.
So for me, today – what’s next is just trying to maintain a conscience effort to keep plugging along towards whatever greatness I’m ment to accomplish… regardless of the obstacles, the timing or the color of the sky – just keep doing whatever it is that I think is the right thing to do.

What’s next for you?

Site gremlins and internet potholes

I recently upgraded my hosting account and as a result all of my shopping space is unavailable today. Maybe it’s a nice downtime to get other things done – but in the meantime all shoppers are turned away by weird unavailable pages and server errors.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you – I think I’m trying to help you save money by not being open today. I have the company working on the problem and hopefully it will be resolved today… cross your fingers.

spring snow

While things are rough with website stability… it’s mid April and I’m surrounded by snow which has also resulted in the cable internet going out – with no quick fix (thank goodness for wireless cards). Everything happens in 3s, so we’re hoping this is it for the weekend.

They’ll stomp right into action with their “get your act together” hiney kicking tactics – sure to get you strolling along towards success and happiness.

sidenote: these footsies aren’t all work and no play… They also enjoy prancing, dancing, tip-toeing through tulips, taking long strolls at sunset and general frolicking about.

Rebirth and Rediscovering – who are you today?

cake for breakfastEvery year I go through a phase of downtime right around the end of March, beginning of April. I try to figure out where I am and where I want to be. I ponder where I think I can go while I struggle with wanting to just sit and take a nap. I’ve read that our personal cycles renew every year at our birthdays, it’s a starting over point I guess –

I don’t know if this is a bio-rhythm thing or a moon and tide thing or something I made up completely and just think I read. I do know, however, that since I discovered the concept, this time of year has been easier for me to understand and accept – it no longer feels like a fog covered path. I don’t fight the down and up of the season anymore. Instead, I try to ride it out and come away with a new perspective on what I am doing and who I am.

I’m rediscovering the crafty me this year – I think. Instead of fighting for the need to work on websites or build new blogs vs the desire to color and glue and sew… I’m mixing the two. I’m allowing myself to be crafty and play with clay or buy new ribbon. I’ve been playing with designs for fabric and paper cutouts. I’ve realized that sometimes we can work at playing or we can play while we work… as long as I am being creative and the ideas keep flowing, I’m ok with whatever the project is.

Ultimately I would like to grow to the point that I don’t have to rediscover myself, but instead know who I am and merely reiterate where I want to be. For now, I’m happy with the adventure in it all. I’m enjoying meeting new people, thinking through new angles and trying out new paths. I’m especially excited about discovering areas I forgot I loved – and allowing myself the time to not only look into every window that I come across, but rediscover what sits inside.

How do YOU brainstorm? Share your thoughts

I have a site called Idea Sundae with the goal of brainstorming ideas both on my own (out loud) and with others. Any topic fits the concept and it’s amazing to me how many random thoughts pass through my head on any given day. Yet, I get so caught up with the doing, the writing about the thinking has been overlooked. So now I’m bringing it all back here to my main blog so I can remember to not only write it down, but share the ideas and thinking processes.
