A penguin a day until Christmas – feel like fishing?

Today is not a good day to go fishing, at least not in Colorado. I can’t do a whole lot of fishing in the middle of the freezing winter season – no I’m not a fan of the ice fishing concept. However, when I was little I loved to fish!, Both of my grandparents would take me fishing every now and then – even with the worms I thought fishing was so much fun.

One time, I was busy bragging about my fishing skills so my Grandpa made a bet that I couldn’t catch anything in one pass of the boat. I took him up on that bet. He drove me around for about 15 minutes…
I caught a tiny little bull fish. That counts – I won!

If I were a penguin, I’d definitely have a fishing hat like this…

A penguin a day until Christmas – we love cookies!

Every year, as a family, we have a “cookie making day”. We make cookies and then package them with our holiday cards and take them to the neighbors. I don’t have a cookie making penguin, so the all purpose chef will have to do. Maybe he’s also a baker, don’tcha think that could work?

My favorite cookie of the season is chocolate covered peanut butter sandwich no bake cookies.

What you need:

  • Wax paper or a washable non-stick working surface
  • Ritz crackers
  • Peanut Butter
  • Melted chocolate or almond bark (the almond is like white chocolate)

Make ’em

  1. Make peanut butter sandwiches with two Ritz crackers and peanut butter in the middle
  2. Melt the bark in a medium to large bowl – follow instructions for melting on the package
  3. Do not let the bark cool
  4. Carefully place individual sandwiches in the bowl and then scoop them out with a fork. If needed, gently stir the sandwich until it is covered.
  5. Let a little of the bark drip off back into the bowl
  6. place the sandwich on your non-stick surface to cool

For added festive fun, before the chocolate thoroughly dries/cools, gentle dust each cookie with colored or chocolate sprinkles.

If the chocolate because clumpy because it is cooling, you can carefully re-heat as needed.

This is also a fun family activity with pretzels of all shapes and sizes!

A penguin a day until Christmas – Vitruvian Man penguin

There is no little poem today
oh no, I have much more to say.
Not to mention I’m nearly out of time..
so here’s a break from another corny rhyme.

Leonardo Da Vinci has always been one of my all time favorite artists, but not because of his famous paintings like the Mona Lisa or the Last Supper. I’m more fond of his style of sketching; strong quick lines that easily depict character and attitude. I’ve always been completely in awe of the amount of brilliance the man possessed. He wasn’t just a great painter, he was an engineer, an inventor, a scientist and an architect. He wasn’t afraid to explore the unknown to answer his own curiosity. He allowed himself to want to learn more and then he pushed ahead to find the answers.

So today’s penguin is the Leonardo Da Vinci Vitruvian Man inspired penguin.

And… this is a perfect introduction to a new site of mine… Art by Leonardo Da Vinci
– This site will feature information, art and items to purchase all relating to Mr. Da Vinci. Oh how I wish he were here to have coffee with today – the thoughts he could share.

Fun side fact… I just realized Leonardo was born on April 15th, which is the day after my birthday – however, had my mother been in Italy when she went into labor, I would have been born April 15th. How cool is that!?

Thank you for the intro penguin!

So here’s something fun… leave a comment or retweet (via twitter) about today’s penguin and you could be randomly selected to receive a free art card of the Vitruvian Penguin, signed and dated!

Please remember: if you tweet, make sure to include @jgoode so I can find it.

Offer ends December 8th, 2009 at 5pm MST.
